This is old news, but I thought I’d fire up a flare anyway in the interest of feeding the wallet-depleting habits of fellow music mavens. The Jazz Loft, one of the foremost millenaries on the net, is winding up its week-long hatOLOGY sale on the July 6th. That’s nearly 90 titles priced @ $4.99 for singles, $6.49 for doubles, quite the deal considering standard list on Hats now hovers just under a Jackson apiece. Happy shopping!
Posted by derek on July 4, 2007 6:32 PMI normally find Hat releases at least worth hearing. Some of the less obvious ones offered I reccomed are:
Any Haubenstock-Ramti, he is an amazing composer
Either Ernstalbrecht Stiebler, he is great.
Koglmann's "We Thought about Duke"
Lou Harrison's "labyrnth"
It is also great that they take paypal, I just got a paypal payment so I blew some of it on these hats.
Posted by: damon Smith at July 5, 2007 12:30 AMDon't forget the Maneris esp. the two by Joe's quartet. A large portion of those titles are listed as OOP on the Hat site making this sale even more of a boon. And the prices really can't be beat.
Posted by: Dugan Magraw at July 5, 2007 4:20 AMI figured those are pretty obvious. My favorites by them are still the trios with Barre Phillips and Joe Morris.
Posted by: damon Smith at July 5, 2007 10:07 AMBut: Jazz Loft were out of many of them almost immediately. I did an order, as did a friend, and we got "out of stock" notices. These orders were placed on July 2.
Posted by: clifford at July 5, 2007 1:09 PMGood news is Alan intends to honor all orders received as long as the Swiss stock @ Hat HQ holds out. I think he's planning a massive restock order w/in the next several weeks. Most of those titles have pressings of 3000, so hopefully there will still be enough to go 'round.
Posted by: derek at July 5, 2007 1:48 PMDoes anybody agree with me that the woman in the middle picture in the top row is actually Ronnie Reagan in a wig?
Posted by: walto at July 11, 2007 1:54 PMHey check out the new Bruce Hornsby, Jack DeJohnette and Christian McBride album CAMP MEETING coming out AUGUST 7TH 2007!!! This is the first Hornsby jazz album and includes never before released cover "Questions and Answers" by Ornette Coleman!! Click below to purchase the album on amazon.com

They all look like weird love children of Audrey Hepburn and Barbara Billingsley to me.
Posted by: derek at July 11, 2007 2:26 PMI pretty sure that's Reagan.
Posted by: walto at July 12, 2007 3:59 AMWatch it, Walt, you're talking about a guy eponymous with an airport.
Swinging the pendulum back to Hat, anyone heard Hans Kennel's recent all-alphorns project?
Posted by: derek at July 12, 2007 4:33 AMYou've been watching too many Oliver Stone films, Walt.
Posted by: Dan Warburton at July 12, 2007 9:05 AMHas anyone gotten any news of their order yet?
Posted by: damon Smith at July 12, 2007 9:37 AMHaven't heard anything yet.
Posted by: Jacob Lindsay at July 12, 2007 12:04 PMMy order (10cds) was processed on the 10th. Looking forward to hearing Stiebler's "Im Klang", I really enjoyed his other hatART disc.
I'll add my own recommendations for:
Peter Ablinger - Grisailles
James Tenney - Complete Works for Percussion
The Tenney disc is my favorite of the percussion hatNOWs. I listen to it much more often than Labyrinth or the Matthias Kaul. the hatOLOGY discs don't really excite me as much.
Posted by: soulfrieda at July 13, 2007 9:01 AMDamon - haven't heard back about my order, but I figure this is the fault [as always] of either US or Canadian customs.
My order arrived today:
Tenney (et al), "Forms I-4"
Haubenstock-Ramati, "Mobile For Shakespeare"
I like Tenney. I saw him play Cage's "Sonatas and interludes for prepared piano" with one lung and pneumonia. He incredible.
I was to a lecture demonstration earlier in the week.
He had so much passion for the music and he expressed it by studying it in depth.
I was far more moved by his deep invlovment with muisc than anyone I have seen making sex faces while they play.
And then there is this:

My huge order arrived a couple of days ago in (surprise, surprise!) perfect condition. (isn't it incredible how both dollars are at par now...this makes record shopping that much more pleasurable) Canada Customs didn't touch the package, just stamped it with their usual "customs cleared" manner. Big shock there!
Thanks Jazz Loft for the professionalism and thanks to Derek for bringing this to everyone's attention!
I just heard that Paul Rutherford died a few days ago. He was a great improviser, a master of his instrument and creator of the truly amazing 'Discreet Harm of the Bourgeoisie', a solo improvisation that must rank with the best ever recorded.
Posted by: Paul Kelly at August 8, 2007 11:00 AMIt was really 'The Gentle Harm ...'.
Bunuel will get you everytime.

There's another big hat sale at JazzLoft - $3.60 per disc, minimum purchase of 5 discs. Think it ends tomorrow. Go nuts.
Posted by: soulfrieda at September 12, 2007 2:15 PMSoulfrieda - can you provide a link to the sale.
I don't see anything on Jazzloft site.
i don't see anything on their site either. i followed a link on an e-mail. perhaps it was only sent out to their mailing list. don't have the e-mail anymore, sorry....

Posted by: soulfrieda at September 13, 2007 1:05 PMSale must be over. I got 5 for $18 plus shipping.
One of them doesn't play, though.
Posted by: walto at September 14, 2007 3:51 AMWalto - that's weird. How long was this sale on for? A day?
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at September 14, 2007 12:22 PMWalto - that's weird. How long was this sale on for? A day?
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at September 14, 2007 12:31 PMNot sure, Tom.
But I'm noticing some problems with a couple of the other discs now, too. If I were the suspicious sort, I might wonder if maybe they were so cheap because they were actually returns that were simply re-wrapped and re-sold.
Posted by: walto at September 14, 2007 1:46 PMMine were totally fine.
Posted by: Reuben Radding at September 15, 2007 10:05 PMwalto,
Could you tell us which one didn't play?
Posted by: clifford at September 15, 2007 10:40 PMDoes anyone have Alan's e-mail at JazzLoft?
I've sent him a number of e-mails with regards to the recent hat sale but no response to date.
Is there another person I should be mailing?
Those pretty packages look beautiful but ruin the cds. They often skip and have trouble playing.
Posted by: damon Smith at September 16, 2007 9:38 AMCould you tell us which one didn't play?
The one that doesn't play at all is Clementi, Madrigale . A couple of the others skip. Why?
Posted by: walto at September 16, 2007 5:37 PMTry to burn yourself a back-up, often that will play fine.
Posted by: Wombatz at September 17, 2007 1:45 AMHi, Wombatz. Thanks, I may try that with the two that skip.
But the Clementi doesn't even seem to have the right data on it--wrong number of cuts, wrong file types, etc.
Posted by: walto at September 17, 2007 4:22 AMThat's weird Walt. The only problem I've ever had w/ a hatOLOGY disc was a glitch on the Brötz/McPhee, but that was fixed w/ a subsequent pressing. The packaging doesn't bother me, though I suppose it does take a bit more effort to make sure there isn't any grit or dust on the cardboard sleeves when you put the discs back. Alan (of Jazz Loft) is a good guy; I'm sure he'll replace the bum copies for kosher ones.
Posted by: derek at September 17, 2007 5:31 AMDerek, do you have direct contact to Alan at JazzLoft?
He's not answered the e-mails with regards to the current [past?] hathut sale. Do you know of an alternate address for those guys?
Tom, I haven’t been in direct touch w/ Alan for awhile. Just the occasional hat promo package & come to think of it haven’t received one of those in awhile either. You might want to try giving him a call at the number listed on the site. Iirc, he’s pretty good about answering it.
I think that most recent sale was just a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it blowout.
Posted by: derek at September 17, 2007 10:53 AMAs to the why, probably because of the laminated cardboard. It’s cut to make the pocket, and the CD is pressed directly against the cut. I know from bookmaking that if you don’t properly first dry then later store these materials, all kind of shit can happen. When you hold the playable sides of the skipping CDs against the light, I’d venture a guess you’ll find one or more milky lines following the form of that cut there that you can’t wipe away. If you can’t find them, look again. If you still can’t find them, please somebody delete this post.
Posted by: Wombatz at September 17, 2007 12:36 PMNo need to delete; there is unwipable weirdness there.
What there isn't, is any response from Alan Lawrence.
Posted by: walto at September 18, 2007 10:24 AMAnother sale I happened across by chance - selected disks for $9.95 ea:
Lots of Braxton for you completists; nothing I'd consider a must-have, 'cept maybe the duos with Roscoe - Crispell?
Posted by: Djlletante at October 9, 2007 4:11 PMJust a heads-up to anyone who cares:
Jazz Loft's hat sale is back, thru January 7.
All the stuff that's normally $9.99 is now $4.88 (mostly older stuff, aside from the Brotzmann/McPhee 'TALES OUT OF TIME').
