I’m winging out to Austin, Tejas on Friday for the wedding of my girlfriend’s brother. He’s a man after my own heart considering that the only stipulations on attendance are a willingness to swill copious amounts of beer and leave all facsimiles of formal attire at home. No problemo! We’ll be in the city through Monday and needless to say, I’m looking forward to the change of scenery from the humid greenery that is Minneapolis to the thunderstorm-prone desert that is Austin this time of year. I haven’t been there since an impromptu road trip in grad school some nine or so years ago, so I’m not that versed in the current must see sights & sounds. If there are any readers out there who can give me a heads-up on the local attractions, I’d be much obliged.

Posted by: clifford at May 8, 2007 11:42 PMI just went to Austin a few weeks ago, I like it a lot there. PG Moreno and Chris Cogburn are doing a great job presenting music there (PG with free jazz, very good programming; and Chris with free improv/eai, including the No Idea Festival).
When I was there I saw the ICP Orchestra (Tobius Delius kicked ass! All of them, really) and next night -at the same space, even- Tina Marsh's Creative Opportunity Orchestra, a large ensemble with great Texan musicians (my favorite interventions were by tenor player Alex Coke; man, that guy rocks! He should be so much better known. And also by trombonist Brian Allen).

Posted by: Gerardo Alejos at May 10, 2007 11:37 PMSo, how was your girlfriend's brother's wedding?
Posted by: walto at May 22, 2007 12:29 PMPretty great, thanks for asking. The bride made her own dress & wedding cake and the groom picked up his tux at a local thrift shop. The ceremony and reception were held in their backyard w/ a five piece Brazilian band providing sounds and a table full of top shelf liquor supplying social lubricant (Patron made a power play to unseat Maker’s Mark as my intoxicant of choice).
Had a great time in Austin too w/ trips to Barton Springs and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, but I dropped the ball on a planned confab w/ Clifford. Not much time for cd safariing, though I did find dirt cheap copies of McCoy Tyner’s Supertrios and Junior Cook’s On a Misty Night. Caught a local jazz quintet on the first night at The Elephant Room where pitchers of Chimay Triple went for the princely sum of $30 apiece. Curiously enough, the drummer’s name was J.J. Johnson.
