Spare Change?

What's that they say about death and taxes? A third certainty here at Bagatellen is the annual appearance by the server host piper, a surly leotarded sort who won't leave the premises until payment is proffered. In past years, we've cut the requisite check from the coffers and sent him on his surly way. This year, with Namor submerged somewhere under the Seven Seas, I've come to discover that I don't have access to our Alms account. In the interest of giving mine & Brian's wallets a break, I thought I would try an experiment and initiate an informal Bags pledge drive. The annual server fee is $157.00. I've dispatched a Bags busking team (pictured below) to several of the busiest street corners, but thus far they’ve come back with bupkis. Any bread you can spare (crumbs or loaves) would be much appreciated. Donations can be made via PayPal to derekct AT gmail.com. Just click on the simple “Send Money” tab and follow the instructions. I’ll keep a running tally here of the progress.

Wow, just two days in and we're already over a third of the way there. Copious thanks to Nate Dorward, Joel Wanek, K A Kilimis, Reuben Radding, and Stephane Berland for their generous contributions to the cause.

Maybe Nate sold that Braxton box to raise some ready cash.. either that or the Collected Works of JH Prynne :))

Big thanks to Gary Sisco, Stephane Berland, Reuben Radding, Tom Djll, William Russell & Sergio Zamora for their recent philanthropic contributions. We’re now just a double sawbuck or so shy of our goal and I am deeply gladdened by the show of support.

Hey, Walt. Where’s your two bits? Cutting edge commentary on choco-bars & comix doesn’t come cheap!

This just in:

Farewell, Tommy

Learning about the best ever performances of Beckett right here at bagatellen is fun, Derek, but I've got other charitable (and personal) priorities. I'm afraid my contributions will have to be restricted to the fond memories of my passionate interviews and acute book reviews....

(Also, the IRS informed me a couple of days ago that they think I owe them $3600 from 2005!)

OTOH, if every dollar sent here would buy a week's worth of comic books for some dying cherub.....

Understood, Walt. A friend of mine ran similarly afoul of the those IRS suits several years ago. They're worse than Hoover-era Feds when it comes to fingering the wrong man.

Any excess funds from the pledge drive will likely go toward refurbishing the Bags submersible fleet that's been languishing in drydock since last summer. Those Fijians have held the Inter-Hemispherial Title for far too long!

I tried to sell my collection of Creative Sources discs to support you good chaps ... but there were no takers.

Posted by: Graham L. Rogers at May 4, 2007 1:04 PM

WHICH CS discs are you selling, Mr L?
(BTW, hats off to Graham for his magnificent curatorship of the Barry Guy Portrait on Intakt)

Posted by: Dan Warburton at May 4, 2007 10:40 PM

Thank you very much, Dan. It was a labour of love. Barry Guy's "Portrait" embraces 35 and more years of outstanding music, selected from some 32 issued recordings, and so hopefully will appeal to a wide range of Bags' visitors.

Not even the good ones? Do you have Los Glissandinos?

Posted by: soz at May 5, 2007 11:01 AM

Los Glissandinos? Heavens, no the name alone made me run a mile. Was I wrong?!

Posted by: Graham L. Rogers at May 6, 2007 3:33 AM

yes!!!

- I thought the best part was Graham's essay. I have warn anyone who is a Barry Guy Completist like me: You won't get much out of it. The texts and photos are nice but not worth $20.
I think one or two alternante takes or unissued tracks could have made a world of difference.

If you don't know his work, or don't have much of it it is a great place to start. It looks great, I just have all that stuff.

Speaking of being a Barry Guy completist, does anyone have this:
http://efi.group.shef.ac.uk/labels/various/aud1203.html

I tried everything from contacting Barry to the label to get it with no luck, I'd be happy to even pay for a cdr copy at this point...

The Guy/Homburger/Prati disc is listed on Amazon UK (look for "Maya Homburger Celebration").

Can us Yanks order from Amazon UK, via PayPal? I've never tried...

Dang, I was sure I only hit the "Post" button once...

...anyway, wouldn't it be loverly (not that this is a hint or anything) if there were a forum on Bags where people could post questions of this ilk, instead of having to hijack some other thread...

Questions, like, f'rinstance, "Hey, I've been checking out the Ambiaence Magnetique (sp?) website, and there are a couple of items I've been thinking of ordering: the Koch/Denzler duets, a couple of trios w/ Malcolm Goldstein, the Leandre/Lenoci duets. Anybody have any thoughts on any of these discs? Or anything else on the label that might be worth a listen? And how about Jean Derome--I wasn't too impressed w/ his CIMP disc, but should I give him another try?"

Posted by: Bill R at May 7, 2007 7:31 PM

I remember the Leandre/Lenoci as quite good, if not outstanding; I'm afraid I no longer have it to check. There was a slight mastering problem on one track--nothing massively irritating, but a bit of static cutting in and out. I've encountered that on other CDs too so I guess it's a common problem.

Never really been bowled over by the Ambiences Magnetiques I've heard, but there have been ones I liked. The recent RM Lepage tribute to Pee Wee Russell is a lot of fun.

Thank you for the kind words, Damon.

(P.S. If you can't track down a copy of "Celebration", I'll can get one to you via the friendly channels here).

You flogged your copy of Los Glissandinos Graham? Your loss, mate. Hope you didn't get rid of L'Ecorce Chante La Foret.. :)

Posted by: Dan Warburton at May 7, 2007 11:47 PM

I won't be drawn into what I parted with, Dan! No point in making non-essential enemies. But rest assured,I didn't throw you out!

Posted by: Graham L. Rogers at May 8, 2007 12:34 AM

Nate, thanks for the response re Leandre/Lenoci. Sounds like maybe I should just wait for the Ambiences Magnetiques to show up in the used bins at Amoeba, & spend my hard-earned pennies on other things...like catching up with all the John Butchers that have come out in the last couple of years...
