I stumbled across this amazing trio of pint-sized Argentinean rockers on a Maker’s fueled YouTube binge. Vaguely reminiscent of The Shaggs, but a damn sight better in terms of musicianship & taste, brothers Emilio (14) and Martin (10) are the heart and soul on guitar & bass with amigo Augstin (11) completing the band on cans. The power of the net beams performances taped in their bedroom “studio” to the global headbanging masses. According to a December ’06 interview with Vice Magazine they’ve accumulated a songbook of 30 covers, but stadium-sized gigs are still elusive. My Español is rustier than a sunken Spanish doubloon so the copious entries on their blog aren’t much help in learning more, but there are still plenty of great pics to peruse. Here are a couple of the choicest video clips:
Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” and “Hallowed Be Thy Name”
Solo Emilio [those with severe arpeggio allergies beware!]
Tribute to Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Sepultra’s “Refuse, Resist” [Emilio & Martin pulling a switcheroo]

Posted by: anon at February 19, 2007 5:42 PMThose guys have good chops! This post reminded me to get The Shaggs' CD, which I haven't heard yet.
Here in my town we had a kid like that, a prodigious guitar player since he was 11 or 12. When I was totally into heavy metal in my teens we used to go to his neighborhood to hear him play note-for-note the Iron Maiden and (Marty Friedman's) Megadeth solos.
He is an amazing contemporary guitar player now (he's around 21 or 22 now), his name is Cecilio Perera and he's currently getting his master's in classical guitar in Austria. Here are some video excerpts of a concert he gave last year, that we hosted (sorry but they're short clips):

Posted by: Gerardo Alejos at February 23, 2007 12:01 PMThanks for those clips, Gerardo. I’m kind of surprised that folks like Phil and Jason haven’t sounded off here with comments as I’d be curious what other “metalheads” think of the Gauchos. The implicit timeline of the YouTube performances is pretty cool: ie. Emilio’s chops are markedly better on “The Trooper” then on “Hallowed Be Thy Name” & the kids have longer, shaggier locks on the later cuts.
