Well, it’s safe to say that the Bill Dixon thread two doors down can be added to the select others in the mud-sodden drawer of bloated Bags debacles. Moreover, despite Marc’s initial best intentions. I’m not sure what it is about the long-distance nature of the net, but it periodically seems to bring out the worst in us, myself most certainly included. Therefore, here’s a trio of apposite quotes from my main man J-C that will hopefully get us back on track:
“A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful, and restrained. It can afford to extend a helping hand to others. It's a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity.”
“There should be an honest attempt at the reconciliation of differences before resorting to combat.”
“Aggression unopposed becomes a contagious disease.”

Posted by: Brian Olewnick at October 12, 2006 12:22 PMGo ahead, joke about my sincere motives at delousing this joint. Just for that, no peanuts for you!
Posted by: derek at October 12, 2006 12:41 PMOh, for fuck's sake... I don't even think that thread is about Bill Dixon anymore, nor was it after about the first fifteen posts.
But then, I guess I'm one of those "uncritical" folks and can't say anything bad about my "heroes" (my family are my only heroes). This is why I never allow comments on reviews/crap I post - I mean, what could've happened with the Vandermark review if I'd left it open? This is also why I don't often send people links to things on Bagatellen. No offence to Derek, but it gets so easily out of control/hard to weed through.
That said, I have no problems with ANYBODY on this site/forum personally. Y'all are great people, but some of the banter gets totally fucking retarded.
Peace in the Middle East-

No offense taken, but who's fault is that? If we'd all just remember why we're here - not to insult & belittle one another or be smarmy & clever, but to shoot the shit about music, etc.- a big slice of the problem would be solved. At least I think so. As MJ used to say before the crazy went and bit him:
"I'm starting with the man in the mirror;
I'm asking him to change his ways;
and no message could have been any clearer;
if you want to make the world a better place;
take a look at yourself and make that change."
Damn Derek...by this point Michael had flushed his career down the drain! Anything past "Thriller" is complete crap.
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at October 12, 2006 3:42 PMWho's disagreeing with you? It's the earnest sentiment behind the lyrics that I'm struggling to foment.
Posted by: derek at October 12, 2006 3:50 PMYou're a sweet man, Derek. I've always liked you--Carter too. I'm sincerely sorry if I've caused you any angina with my posts here.
Posted by: walto at October 12, 2006 4:33 PMNo worries, Walt. A new leaf is turned.
Posted by: derek at October 12, 2006 4:55 PMDerek, just to set the record straight, walto and walt are two differant people- your assertions about me in your last Dixon post were mistaken, but you will believe what you wish to believe, by the way, I enjoy this site.
Posted by: walt at October 12, 2006 5:20 PMAnd speaking of posts, I strongly urge any & everyone to take a good long gander at Professor Bivins latest Creative Sources treatise: 14 discs in under 2300 words, proving once again why he's the undisputed master of his craft. As always, encomiums welcome.
Posted by: derek at October 12, 2006 5:22 PMSorry, Walt, didn’t mean to falsely point a finger at you.
I’m taking an (obviously) much needed break now & heading out to catch Stefan & Aaron Gonzalez (Dennis’ sons) jam w/ Douglas Ewart, hopefully to a crowd of more than a dozen people.
I don't download very much music, though I understand many others make quite a habit of it. So as far as I'm concerned, the internet is for two things: fighting and porn. I don't see what the big deal is about these slap-fight threads - they're either funny or they're not, but there's no need for meta-threads commenting on them. I only wish people would step up their rhetorical game a little - speaking strictly as a reader, the Dixon thread is fucking boring because nobody there's got any talent for invective. If you're not even ready to call your nemesis of the moment an incontinent, thumbless pigfucker, you're not showing anywhere near sufficient commitment to the exchange.
Posted by: pdf at October 12, 2006 5:51 PMSo far that's the best pdf post I've encountered!

On a completely unrelated note, my sincere condolences for your recent loss, Phil.

Posted by: Graham L. Rogers at October 13, 2006 12:42 PMderek, um, phil requested namecalling. hardly my row. can i go back and play now?
been listening to the new kent carter string trio disc which is so beautiful it shames much else.
Posted by: steve barberry at October 13, 2006 1:05 PMSorry for the musical interlude, but I've been enjoying Janek Schaefer's new disc "In the Last Hour" recently. One of my favourite things all year.
On another note, I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry that too many people at Bags have turned this site into sheer comedy. Certainly, some individuals provide higher quality entertainment than others...
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at October 13, 2006 1:53 PMTom, I've just listened to that Schaefer disc once but was pretty intrigued by it. More to come...
Posted by: Brian Olewnick at October 13, 2006 1:59 PM"been listening to the new kent carter string trio disc which is so beautiful it shames much else"
Yes indeedy. I copped it after immensely digging the prior recording and this almost matches it.
Posted by: Michael Schaumann at October 13, 2006 2:07 PMI've been listening to the Circle Jerks' "World Up My Ass."

And I expressly requested an end to that crap with the lead post. But don’t fret, we’re working as fast as we can on that broom closet. Once the crumbling asbestos-lined wallpaper has been fully excised, you boys can go down there and play to your hearts’ content.
As to the Carter, I’m with you & Schau completely, it’s an amazingly beautiful album, one that just might top Willisau Suites. Just poured a tumbler of Courvoisier & getting ready for an inaugural trip through the new Dave Burrell Trio on High Two.

Please don’t name names, but if if I’m among them, I’m happy to have provided a hearty laugh. Just sad that all the merriment had to come with a fair share of foul-smelling muck.
Anyone have some split-second advice on how to sell a skeptical Mason Jennings-loving girlfriend on attending a Brötzmann/Anthony Cox/Mark Sanders Trio performance tonight?
Posted by: derek at October 13, 2006 2:57 PMCourvoisier
Posted by: Michael Schaumann at October 13, 2006 4:41 PMDerek - not to worry - you were not on my list of names. So, let's keep the laughter going!
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at October 13, 2006 4:53 PMi didn't think willisau suites could ever be topped, but I think this new one actually does it.
d.t. - when you go meta, sometimes people go so far meta it gets sublime
what i've really been cranking all week is that bluegrass tribute to van halen. the deadpan version of ain't talkin bout love is fucking insane.
there's that and the sun city girls piano bar box which me and some fellow reeking souls will conjure stickily tonite. i already fucked my girlfriend with one of the condoms it came with (she was balanced on her elbows making devil horns off the side of her head, me behind)
Posted by: steve barberry at October 13, 2006 5:06 PMI can't wait to hear the Carter string trio. He is a real favorite of mine.
Posted by: Damon Smith at October 14, 2006 12:56 AMEverybody dropping their Carter yes-vote into the apposite thread. Very well-mannered. But is it democratic?
Posted by: Carter the Unstoppable ... at October 14, 2006 2:54 AMI’d like to take a minute and publicly apologize to Joe Morris for my part in the earlier fracas that sparked the pacifist post above. He felt unfairly singled out & attacked by me and for that I’m sorry. I'm not very good at playing the policeman and sometimes the wrong heads get cracked by my billy-club. That said, I promise this will be the last meta-post from me for awhile.
Posted by: derek at October 14, 2006 1:23 PMPDF - Circle Jerks...I remember these guys were smashing live as headliners, while 7 Seconds opened up...are they still around?
Incidentally, I have this green 7" lost somewhere in my basement of punk band doing a cover of Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry"...was it Gang Green that covered it?
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at October 14, 2006 4:17 PMI don't know if the Jerks are still around, but I saw their 10th anniversary "farewell" tour in 1989 or 1990, and they were phenomenal that night.
Posted by: pdf at October 14, 2006 4:22 PMThe Jerks concerts I had in mind date a few years before that...mid 80's is my guess....around the time when the mighty, mighty Bad Brains ruled the planet [nobody was able to rule the crowd like the almighty HR - though he did have his share of problems crossing the border into Canada more than a few times...wonder why..]
Posted by: Tom Sekowski at October 14, 2006 4:39 PMYou're right, Derek. You're not too good at this at all.
Because actually, you didn't single Joe out. You didn't single anybody out, until you singled me out on the Lantner thread when I responded in kind after being called a failure and a loser. That was when you basically threatened to ban me. Later you apologized to somebody named Walt for thinking he was me and whacking HIM by mistake. So yeah, this kind of thing obviously isn't your forte. You're too nice and you get confused.
Posted by: walto at October 14, 2006 6:37 PMSpeaking of Carter, people of age will undoubtedly remember that his name was generally treated as a punch line for many years. Always annoyed the hell out of me. Nowadays he's either likely to inspire seething hatred (which doesn't bother me so much), or else comments along the line of "he is a better ex-president than he was a president."
Me, I think of his apparently brilliant handling of the Camp David talks, as described in Benny Morris's Righteous Victims. Here's the "Search This Book" page on Amazon. Seach for "Carter." He really doesn't get enough credit for what he accomplished.
Posted by: godoggo at October 14, 2006 8:49 PMI’m breaking my self-imposed moratorium on meta, but Walto’s post deserves a reply:
The deck is stacked & I can’t win. I’m not interested in “banning” anyone now or ever. Hell, I don’t even have the technical expertise to do that even if I’d knocked off an entire liter of Maker’s & found myself so inclined. So long story short, yeah, I’m not very good at this. But don’t let that be a license for licentiousness, Emory’s just a speed dial away & he’s got mad knowledge on how all the sprockets & diodes work around these parts. It’s probably high time we took a portion of that “huge” Alms surplus Bags has been accruing and hired some muscle to properly enforce the rules of civility and sportsmanship.
In the meantime, Walto, please let me heartily recommend picking up a copy of the new Carter (Kent, not Jimmy) disc, it’s right up your alley, & if it happens you don’t dig it, I’ll gladly eat my epaulet.
Posted by: derek at October 14, 2006 9:35 PM>Speaking of Carter, people of age will undoubtedly remember that his name was generally treated as a punch line for many years. Always annoyed the hell out of me.
So I take it the Simpsons gag about a statue of him being erected in Springfield (a voice from the crowd: "He's history's greatest monster!") didn't make you laugh? Cause it killed me.
Posted by: pdf at October 15, 2006 5:29 AMI'm sure I'd like the Carter disc, too, Derek. I loved the last one, anyway.
Cheers.

Posted by: walto at October 15, 2006 5:44 AMI don't remember that Simpsons...that should have read "people of a certain age."
I am of a certain age, for example.
Posted by: godoggo at October 15, 2006 1:17 PMIn the event, I actually don't care so much for this Carter trio disc as I did for the last one. Nicely played, though.
