New Man on Deck

Proving I’m no pugnacious Perry White and that a bended-knee plea can produce results, Troy Collins joins the bullpen with the first in what will hopefully be a slew of reviews. You may be familiar with Troy through his incisive work over at One Final Note and All About Jazz, the latter of which where he’s one of the few to tackle the freer leaning albums on a regular basis. I’m glad to have him on board and we’ve already got him outfitted for a snug-fitting Submersible Team uniform. With Al returned from active duty in October & once again at the helm of the ship, we might just have a shot at the Southern Hemisphere Circumnavigational Title, wresting it from the hands of those seemingly unbeatable Fijians.

I am not one to complain about criticisms I get, but in a basically good review he wrote of Spergut, he wrote that those looking for harmony, Rhythm and melody should look elsewhere.
My only concern is that in order to write about this music one needs to be able to understand the expanded relationships of those three aspects of music as it relates to free music.
If you are not playing a unision you are playing a harmony of somekind, and rhythms need not be repeated to to qualify as such.
Anyway, welcome to the bullpen.

Oh my, controversy all ready. And so soon.

Damon, I read back over the review you mentioned. I apologize for my linguistic oversight in my write-up of Spergut. I should have inserted the modifier "traditional" and/or "conventional" in front of my comment about harmony, rhythm and melody. My remark was not meant as an insult.

None taken, I appreciate the review and taking the time to listen. Those ideas were just on my mind after a discussion of BIll Dixon's work at AAJ, when this post came up here I checked my review archives and re-read the review.

Bagatellen seems to have gone dead for a day. No-one has any music to talk about?? OK, let me stir the pot. Has anyone heard the Mahavishnu Cleveland 72 gig? Any reactions?

Bags always goes dead on the last day of the month because I'm working on uploading the next issue of PT and you're all sitting around waiting for it ;-) (Not serious, before you all write in.. but the new issue IS now up and you might recognise a few friends..) I suspect another reason is that everyone's gone off to Erstquake. But in answer to your q, no I haven't heard the Cleveland 72 gig.. why, should I?

Just tossing out ideas! I've read a few things about this set on the web, not least the fact that McLaughlin has apparently been badgering Columbia to release it for the last 34 years. That alone must mean something, one hopes.

I've heard the Mahavishnu Orchestra in Chateauvallon in August 1972.
It seems that it was their first concert ever.
This has been recorded by the French TV (called ORTF, in this far away time) and broadcast month later (Radio/TV).
Why I'm telling this?
Really Dunno. Maybe because I like it at that time (I was young and impressionable).
But I've never like none of their records that I bought after.
It was the magic of one night.

First concert ever? No, that happened in 1971...

Posted by: Graham L. Rogers at October 4, 2006 2:08 PM

So, it wasn't.

Their first concert was in a club in New York July 1971
but the Chateauvallon concert Aug 21, 1972 may have been their 1st concert in France

There is a radio broadcast of part of the Chateauvallon concert but was it also actually shown on TV ?

is there anyway to confirm it and would ORTF still have it in their archives ..... if so ... do they do requests if people write in requesting it be shown ?

The 2nd line up was at Antibes France July 1974 was that ever shown on TV ?

.
