Sad news. Albert Mangelsdorff died in Frankfurt after battling a lengthy illness. His MPS albums (collected on two Verve box sets) and the dates with the Brötzmann/Bennink/Van Hove trio on FMP were semi-regular spins for me with much enjoyment gleaned. Definitely one of the doyens in the pantheon that includes: Ory, Teagarden, Rosolino, Johnson, Knepper, Rudd & a handful of others. May he rest in peace.
Posted by derek on July 25, 2005 4:16 PMIn the 1970s (or was it an early '80s release?) I used to love his Trilogue group with Jaco Pastorius and Alphonse Mouzon, and when Verve re-issued it alongside a couple of other MPS records on a 2-CD set I bought a copy. I have to confess, though, I haven't got round to playing it. It's in a sealed cardboard box somewhere hereabouts, sharing space with hundreds of other loved but neglected CDs. I suspect that's true of many other individuals who write about music and receive more CDs than they can deal with (I buy lots of music too, the stuff I never get to review: reggae mainly, but also jazz and 'world music'). But my neglect of Mangelsdorff stems mainly from the fact that he seemed to lose the plot in the latter half of the 1980s. The few recordings that were issued between then and now often seemed misconceived or were just plain dull. I bought a couple, disliked them, viewed what followed with a wary eye. But I mourn his passing. And sometime soon I'll root around in my ample supply of well-stuffed boxes, dig out Trilogue and give it a play.

Ah, the cosmos shifted a bit when he joined in with Brotzmann/Van Hove/Bennink
That he didn't earn more props on this side is a shame.
