that mad season

Festival season's fast approaching and so is the balancing act that comes with planning. Normally it's a question of who's playing where, but sometimes the whole package, or that combination of different musicians therein, drives the decision. Getting overseas would be really cool, but time off from work and the distance involved are an issue. I'm tentatively planning for Europe and it's a toss up between Amplify 2004 and the Freedom of the City shows.

Kicking off the season is this enticing Acme in Athens, GA thing, March 31-April 4. Guests include Joe McPhee, Mats Gustafsson, Peter Brötzmann, Vandermark, Atomic, Joe Morris, and Joe Maneri.

Freedom of the City
's scheduled for London, May 1-3 with the usual suspects and others on hand: Evan Parker, Rhodri Davies, AMM, Gail Brand, Paul Rutherford, Simon H Fell, Parker/Guy/Lytton, Sten Sandell, and Richard Teitelbaum.

This year's Amplify is scheduled on two consecutive weekends, May 6-8 and May 14-16, in Cologne and Berlin, respectively. Musicians include Fennesz, Keith Rowe, Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M, Toshimaru Nakamura, John Butcher, Oren Ambarchi, Marcus Schmickler and more.

Victoriaville runs from May 20 to the 24th, including Derek Bailey, Acid Mother’s Temple, André Duchesne, Ellery Eskelin, Tim Berne, Keith Rowe, Kaffe Matthews, Louis Sclavis and John Zorn.

New York's Vision Fest then runs on a shortened itinerary (thank gah), from the 26th to the 31st of May. Rumor has it these folks will be gracing the stage: The Revolutionary Ensemble, Joe McPhee Quartet with Harold E. Smith, James Blood Ulmer, Kidd Jordan, Khan Jamal Quintet, Gunter Baby Sömmer w/ Connie Bauer and Barre Phillips.

Finally, Vancouver is running its annual activities June 25 thru July 4th. So far only Oscar Peterson is confirmed, asking his usual $85 and up for a seat. Yawn. But the international lineups are unfailingly stellar at this festival. Looking forward to hearing more.

Al: thanks for the reminders. If I go to anything it'll be Vancouver, as (1) I've never been & (2) I have some business in the city anyway. I wish they'd give more details on the lineup though. Any rumours?

there's additional nights surrounding the Berlin half of AMPLIFY: May 10, 13, 17 and 19, details on that same page. and after Rowe and Fennesz leave Berlin, they hit Victo, then Boston (5/25) and NYC (5/27), before going back to Europe and Musique Action:

Nate, I'll let you know when I hear more. Vancouver's a great time that time of year and I'm overdue for this festival.

Posted by: al at February 28, 2004 5:12 PM

I'd love to make it out to the Amplify shows, but it's just a little too complicated and expensive for me.

After last year's Vision Fest (the second time I've gone out there in a row) I was pretty burnt out and swore I'd skip 2004, but I've been starting to get that feeling back in my guts... NYC - it's pretty tempting...

Posted by: Jeff LeVine at February 28, 2004 8:03 PM

Jeff, are you going to be at the ACME thing? Any information you or Armando have to offer on places to stay, eat, etc. would be cool That fest is a strong possibility for me.

Posted by: al at February 28, 2004 11:03 PM

I'm thinking about ACME, too. I'm sure I'll wind up at one or two Vision Festival nights, as I always do. Maybe with the shrunken schedule they'll chop away some of the really tedious vocalists and/or dancers this year, and concentrate on starpower/firepower.

Posted by: Phil at February 29, 2004 5:09 AM

It wouldn't be the Vision Fest without incredibly tedious singers, poets and dancers!

Posted by: Brian at February 29, 2004 7:30 AM

Al, yes - I'll definitely be in Athens the 1st-4th. Part of the appeal of Athens is that I've never been there before, which means I can't offer too much advice. It's a little more expensive to get out there (for me), but staying in town is a lot more affordable - I got a room in the Days Inn downtown for about fifty bucks a night. Don't know what there is to do during the daylight hours in Athens, but at least one won't be exhausted by showtime from walking hundreds of blocks, and I believe the shows will be poetry & interpretative dance free

Posted by: Jeff LeVine at February 29, 2004 10:43 AM

would patricia nicholson parker ever have gotten a gig "dancing" anywhere if she wasnt married to william?

Posted by: mr mean at February 29, 2004 11:26 AM

I'll refrain from commenting on that one, as my own dancing ability is about as good as the montage on the shoddy DVD accompanying the latest Best Of Vision thing on Thirsty Ear (God knows why they bothered - the music's OK but the video.. yeurgh).

Posted by: dan warburton at February 29, 2004 11:51 AM

I’m heading out to Athens w/ Jon Morgan for the full ACME schedule. Like Jeff, we’ll be bunking at the Days Inn, which I gather is a short walk from the 40 Watt where most of the gigs are happenin’ as well as downtown & the U. Al & Phil, hope you guys make the trip.

Tentatively planning on at least a couple days of Vision too, but that’s about it for me festival-wise.

If I'm not in Hawaii and I can find a roomie, I'm there. Good company too!

Posted by: al at February 29, 2004 12:27 PM

We're still deciding if we can make some of Amplify - have to go to NY/Boston this year (not April as I posted on JC, flights are ridiculous then). I'll be at the whole of FoTC, I only have to walk 60ft and sit on a bus for 35 minutes to get there which is nice. Looks like it'll be a good one.

Posted by: Nat at March 1, 2004 10:41 AM

No Athens for Al. Work says I'll be in Hawaii till mid-April. Mixed emotions there, of course, 'specially since the work I'll be doing is clipboard and pencil stuff.

Nat, blow off Boston. Seattle calls.

This thread's about as interesting as my shopping list. I see noone wanted to rush to Patricia's defence, as y'all are too interested in comparing your travel plans. Well have a nice time, I won't be going to any of them, except the one below

Textile Festival
9/10/11 April 2004
Instants Chavires, L'echangeur, Mains d'œuvres

For those of you who wouldn't know,
RATS is a duet: Edward Perraud & Dan Warburton (last release on Textile label)

Posted by: jacques oger at March 1, 2004 11:36 PM

Good call, Dan. Not a lot of creativity here, but it’s still a nice way to see how our possible itineraries might intersect. Re: Patricia, here style of Terpsichore has never really moved me, but I still respect her a great deal. She’s the chief logistic architect behind the galaxy of Vision-related events produced by the Arts For Arts organization & deserves copious props for those efforts alone, not to mention the simple fact of being a sincere and genuine human being. A day late and a dollar short maybe, but Mr Mean chose the right moniker IMHO.

Posted by: derek at March 2, 2004 4:53 AM

I like her well enough, and have nothing but admiration for what she's accomplished over the years, but Patricia needs no defense from me or anybody else.

Posted by: Phil Freeman at March 2, 2004 7:15 AM

Dan, you know the DT-BS guys? (Bobby Moo's the only group I recognise from what very little I know of them).

Posted by: Nat at March 2, 2004 2:21 PM

DT-BS www.dt-bs.com is a reunion of activists / minimal to harsh/ delivering sounds in the sphere of ears. Some are formerly from the P.F.M.S.(paris fucked music society). Such labels as Potlatch, Textile, Periode work to spread the french cum.
