Al recently tipped me off to this shadowy musical figure in giving me a sneak-peek of a new Bags bankrolled venture. Casting a quick Google net, I discovered Seth Tisue’s encyclopedic site on the man/entity/enigma. I’m still swimming through the prose over there, but can safely say my interest is piqued. The mythic mystery that is Corwood Industries, the cryptic meanings behind the album covers and lyrics, the steady stream of albums funneling from a Houston P.O. Box address that shows know sign of abating- all of it makes me scratch my head in admiration. Not having heard a peep of Jandek’s music I’m wondering about other folks experiences with this to date undecipherable cipher. What does Jandek mean to you?
Yeah, I've been interested in learning more about this "person" for a good while now. Thanks for the link.
Posted by: Joe at December 9, 2003 7:52 AMI own five (maybe six) Jandek CDs. Each one is different. This is deliberate - I realize from reading the reviews on the Forced Exposure site and the tisue.net site that he goes/went through "periods," so I bought one from each, to check out all the various permutations of his style. (Actually, I've only bought three or four - I wrote him a letter once, and he sent me two CDs in response, one of which is one of my favorites...the other is not.)
I think my favorite Jandek stuff is when he's playing electric guitar and has a drummer behind him. (Or maybe it's overdubbed drums; who the hell knows?) Anyway, CDs like The Rocks Crumble and Interstellar Discussion are great examples of this, as is Lost Cause, which features a 19-minute guitar freakout at the end (called "The Electric End," suitably enough) that's sort of like what it might sound like if Masayuki Takayanagi had formed a No Wave garage band.
The weirdest thing I've discovered, after buying Jandek's records, is that there are times when no music but Jandek's will do.
Posted by: Phil Freeman at December 9, 2003 8:05 AMThanks for mentioning our little 'Bags bankrolled venture'! Hope you and the readers will come out and play sometime.
I own 34 Jandek CDs, which is to say all of them. If you surf on over to http://www.jandekoncorwood.com and watch the trailer, you'll see a quote from Angela of Twisted Village which perfectly sums up how I felt upon hearing The Man for the first time -- "My initial reaction to hearing ABOUT Jandek was a lot stronger than my reaction to actually hearing it."
Still, there's a lot to be said of his catalog, and much to wade through. Hope you find it as thoroughly engrossing as I have.
Posted by: Chris Nelson at December 9, 2003 11:47 AMAlmost forgot -- got a letter from Corwood saying that Jandek's new CD will be out in 2 weeks. This was about a week ago, so expect it to start popping up real soon.
And, reading Mr. Freeman's comments, I'd have to agree. Jandek is much the same as Nick Cave, Tom Waits and the such -- in that I own a lot of their records, and can go for months without listening to them, but there'll be that week or two every couple months when you're totally engrossed in their catalog and no other music will do.
Posted by: Chris Nelson at December 9, 2003 11:54 AMI have every Jandek CD except the third acapella one. I'm a big fan, but I wouldn't try to get anyone else to like him.

I don't get it. What's "I Hate Music" about? Seems kinda cultish, all dark and foreboding.
Posted by: mke at December 9, 2003 5:47 PMmwanji, if you have to ask, you'll never know.
Posted by: al at December 9, 2003 6:32 PMSo, as mentioned above, I already have five Jandek CDs: Six And Six, The Rocks Crumble, Interstellar Discussion, Lost Cause and The Beginning.
On Monday, though (before the Khanate/Orthrelm show at Tonic), I'm planning on selling a whole bunch of CDs at Kim's, and I'm gonna try and pick up 10 more Jandek CDs.
Going by the descriptions on the Jandek website, I've chosen the following:
The Gone Wait (brand new one, just out this week!)
Chair Beside A Window
Foreign Keys
Telegraph Melts
Modern Dances
You Walk Alone
I Threw You Away
The Humility Of Pain
The Place
Glad To Get Away
Have I chosen wisely? Are there others I should consider instead of the ones listed?
Posted by: Phil at December 13, 2003 5:49 PMPhil -- those all look like good picks, but you NEEEEEED 'Blue Corpse' if you don't already have it. Actually, you need the 1-2 punch of 'Modern Dances' & 'Blue Corpse' and you'll see the little story play out.
The new one and the last one ('The Gone Wait' and 'The Place,' respectively) have both been fantastic. The bass on the new one really suits Jandek, and 'The Place' contains some of his better lyrics.
