Call it a slow week at the office, but I’ve been in awe of late of the Ginger Altoids™ Phenomenon. These little suckers might be more addictive than crystal meth. The fact is the other flavors in the line pack the puny punch of Rolaids™ by comparison. There’s a zinging blast of concentrated ginger that greets the tongue, bordering on a painful tingle. Once you’ve felt it there’s no going back.
A friend brought back a tin from Florida & got me hooked. Scouring the usual supermarket sources I came up empty. Turning to the net I discovered that there are shortages nationwide. That those wily confectionists across the pond have been doling them out in small doses & are even scheming to discontinue the flavor altogether (they’ve removed mention of the product from their website). Auctions abound on Ebay and a Google search reveals countless citizens at their wits end trying to locate tins. My same friend found a small stash at a local food co-op & I now have two tins to tide me over & keep the tremens at bay, but they’re going fast. Anyone else fallen prey to this insidious substance? To those who haven’t, a word of warning- stay clean.
Posted by derek on November 26, 2003 6:34 AMI never see these things in England (any variety), are we being denied, or saved from this.
Posted by: Nathaniel Catchpole at November 26, 2003 6:57 AMNat, depends on how you look at it. Given my current pitiful junkie state I’d have to say ‘saved.’ I am surprised that they’re not widely available in their country of origin. Lends credence to my great Confectionary Conspiracy Theory ;)
Posted by: derek at November 26, 2003 7:11 AMI've been a pack-a-day (spearmint) breathsavers guy for many years. Velamints before that. Lately I've been getting scared by all the aspartame conspiracy theories and have looked for mints with sucralose or sorbitol. There's some Baskin-Robbins mint chocolate chip things that aren't too bad, but basically, I'm in withdrawal.
Posted by: walto at November 26, 2003 3:13 PMWhy not buy mints with actual sugar in them?
Posted by: Nathaniel Catchpole at November 27, 2003 6:52 AMTeeth issues. Also mouth sore issues. I like sugar subs (and now require something other than Aspartame).
Thank God for Diet Rite Cola!
Posted by: walto at December 1, 2003 8:56 AMI feel like Martin Amis writing about my teeth.
Posted by: walto at December 1, 2003 4:17 PMYou can share. G'head.
Posted by: al at December 1, 2003 5:05 PMThis has got nothing to do with Ginger Nuts, or whatever this particular thread is about, but is a plea to Al: on the Bag homepage right column there's room for only 8 reviews to be listed, and yet the points of interest column underneath is about 40odd strong! Surely we want to keep people on the Bag site to read our reviews a little before they zip off to other excellent addresses (like Paris Transatlantic :))? Why don't you thin out the list of Points Of Interest and allow the New Reviews to balloon up to about 20?
Posted by: dan warburton at December 1, 2003 10:11 PMBuena idea Dan.
Walt, glad to see there are fellow addicts out there, misery loves company. The mouth sore issue is one I can relate to. Seems that mints have been increasing in strength over the years as the public palate craves greater and greater potency (parallels to pot and other drugs?). Ginger Altoids are downright painful if consumed in numbers larger than two. The pearly whites take a beating in so many ways these days.
Warburton, stay on topic! Ian D. and I were on our way to an outta-towner a couple weeks back, and he introduced me to the world of the citrus Altoid. My first thought was that this would constitute a category error; but the lip-puckering, head-knocking, ass-kicking effect was quite consistent with other Altoid products. Anyone else try these?
Oh yes, and I don't care for the strips.
Posted by: Jason at December 2, 2003 7:38 AMNothing to do with Altiods or Walt-confessionals, but yeah, Dan. Ratio has been changed to 3:5, in favor of links. There is a point where those new reviews are no longer "new". That's why. But then that could change.
Posted by: al at December 2, 2003 7:39 AMBiv, those citrus ones are corrosive little bastards too. I’m with you on the strips- they suck (no pun intended). Something about the way they dissolve into gelatinous goo on the tongue just turns me off.
