Howdyfuckingdoo from Deer Lodge, Montana!

koa.JPG

We've seen (in depth) Deer Lodge, MT, Yellerstone, WY, Laramie, WY, Capulin, NM, and are now in Corinth, TX. Next stop: Chimayo, NM. RV's holding up fine and the dog makes a fine co-pilot.

The Jones family unit has been cruising the roads with:

Stevie Wonder - Music of My Mind
The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious
Ornette Coleman - Golden Circle, Vol. 1
Frank Rosolino - Frank Rosolino 5 (Mode)
Gerald Wilson Orchestra - Mosiac disc 2
Mingus - Mingus x 5
Derek Bailey - Drop Me Off At 96th
Driveby Truckers - Southern Rock Opera
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Ravel - Bolero (Bernstein)
Strauss - An der schönen, blauen Donau
Dead Meadow - Shivering King and Others
Schlippenbach - Globe Unity

It's been a lovely ride, the wife is even warming to Brötzmann, bless her. The girl (above) is glued to the road, asking 9 year old questions in her 4 year old voice. Her brother earned the title of Junior Park Ranger at Capulin Volcano yesterday AM. So proud. The soundtrack continues... electro-acoustic backdrop planned for Bandelier National Monument. Zeppelin for Painted Desert. We are stoked. Hope you are too.

Love,
Al

What a cutie pie. Glad the rig is holding up under the heavy mileage & tunes of all stripes are spooling freely. Kim’s a trooper on the Brötz front. Don’t ferget to hit Wall Drug if you make it to SD- their free ice water is delicious & they also sell plugged nickels for a quarter each. How’s that for blue-blooded American Capitalism at its finest?

Hope you dig Chimayo. There are so many stories there...

Hello: Nice picture. Too bad you didn't stay at the real nice RV Park just 9 miles up the road at Garrison, Montana! It's the top-rated park in the area and charges less than the KOA!!

You guys are going to go places. You've already done some notable songs, but the Dress Blues song is going to wake some people up. My nephew was killed by a sniper in Vietnam, and he is buried next to my dad. If you get a chance, listen to these songs about a war:

The 8th of November, Big and Rich, about the 173rd Airborne. A small group of these guys were attacked by about two divisions of North Vietnamese and most of them were killed. A survivor of that battle comes out and drinks with them on the anniversary of it, and Kris Kristofferson introduces the song.

The second is And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. It was about an Australian who signed up for Vietnam and lost friends and his leg in a battle. He ends the song with 'An on every 4th I sit on the porch and I watch as the troops pass before me...tired old men from a tired old war.
The young folks ask, 'What are they marching for,' and I ask myself the same question.

It is a measure of your sensitivity and empathy that you can project the total sadness of what happens when you lose someone close to you in combat. You never quite get over it, even if you ignore it.

I still reach for the phone sometimes to call his number and tell him a tasteless joke or something, but put it down when I remember that he is no longer here. It doesn't happen too often any more. The weeping spells have almost completely stopped.

There are some war poems by a soldier who taught at Texas A&M after the war. He wrote very sad songs and prose, and killed himself finally. The sadness of it is that he was so very intelligent and creative.

When I write poetry or prose I often cry.

Thanks for the chance to talk. As 'The Who' used to say, 'The kids are alright.'
