Junk Genius: A Retrospective (Sort Of)

Back in 2000, Pete Gershon from Signal to Noise asked me to pen a feature on the (then) hot and interesting improv quartet, Junk Genius. Derek and Milazzo should remember this well. The project was assigned without much editorial guidance and so, green as I was/am, I went ahead at the feature from a creative writing stance. 8 or so revisions later, STN gave me a choice: scrap the article completely or run it as a brief bio (the content was pared down by Gershon to perhaps 30% of its original size) and side feature. The band and I were both happy with the original -- Schott and Goldberg in particular developed a quick affection for the piece. Pride in tact, but resulting in no big(ger) press coverage for the band, I opted to scrap.

Sadly, I can't locate the original creative piece, but only one of the later revisions and those that followed. This is a special group to me and I feel it would be a shame if the sweat I shed years ago were to eventually evaporate to nothing. Five years lapsed between Junk Genius' two recordings and, with any luck, the world is soon due for another.

Enjoy.
