Let’s call attention to a new collective project initiated by Mr. Pierre Crepon. His premise is to allow readers and listeners to lay claim to out of print literature and audio files that are far out of reach. Prior to the internet, access to news and events related to Free Improv was hellishly limited, provided you didn’t have 10 subscriptions to underground magazines, Cadence and the like notwithstanding. Using information outlets and applications (FTP, google groups, and a blog), Pierre has potentially created a one-stop shopping venue for researchers, writers and the general music lover.
The project’s been official for a couple of weeks, and current available content includes images, pdf files of magazine scans, audio and print interviews, and liner notes. Some interviews: Marzette Watts, Leon Thomas, Frank Wright, Noah Howard, Bobby Few, Glenn Spearman, Alan Shorter, Paul Rutherford, William Parker, Raphe Malik, Paul Lytton, Steve Lacy, AndrĂ© Jaume, Peter Kowald, Elvin Jones, Don Cherry, and John Carter. Many topical articles, too.
The membership is growing, and the project is tightly administered by Pierre, to ensure that only relevant and research-related data is added. Those seeking free music files should look elsewhere. I intend to do my part by scanning some old LP liner notes. If the integrity in the project holds up, this could prove to be a wealth of info that can better inform writers and discographers in their own research. A great idea.
